5 Common SMS Marketing Mistakes

With any marketing channel there is certainly a bit of trial and error. You need to try new things and experiment to see what works and what doesn’t. Every business is different and these things can vary from sector to sector, and business to business.
However when trying and experimenting with new marketing channels, it is a lot easier to make mistakes and wrong moves. Mistakes happen. But no business wants to make them if they can help it, and some can be very costly.
Mobile marketing is a fantastic method of marketing and business communication. One of the reasons SMS marketing is so successful, responsive and effective as a marketing channel, is because it is on such a personal device. However because it is so personal it is imperative to get the fundamentals right within your mobile marketing messages.
So below are 5 common marketing mistakes that if you avoid should help get your mobile marketing campaigns on track.
1 – Forget to say who you are - This seems like an obvious one, but it is a very important one. When it comes to a mobile marketing message, there is no real branding to be applied or a logo graphic to be seen. So you need to make sure you tell your customers who the message is coming from, best way to do this is to set the Sender ID as your business name.
2 – Put too much info in - There can be a tendency to cram lots of information into one message, however the best practice is to keep your messages short, sweet and to the point. Message content overload can end up confusing customers or going over 160 characters into 2 messages which will cost more, and people won’t read reams and reams of text.
3 – Include a call to action - Make sure you include a simple call to action that the customer can do straight away from the text message. Whether that is a website link that they can simply just click, or a phone number they can click to call. You don’t want the customers to have to look or research for anything.
4 – Send at the wrong time - The timing of the message is imperative. Your customer needs to be able to and want to act on your message, there is no point send out a campaign at 3 in the morning for example. Timing depends on your business, customer and the content of your message, think about what your customer would typically be doing at the time they receive your message, and also does the content of your message suit the time of day you are sending it?
5 – Test, test and test again - Again maybe an obvious one, but like with anything you need to make sure you test and double check spelling and all links. Send to yourself and your work colleagues to check everything is correct and working as it should be.
